i think i’m going to write to him once he’s sentenced, etc — insofar as i’ve gleaned from facebook screencaps, etc, he has a strong literary aptitude and a robust psychic landscape, physical appearance aside i find him maddeningly compelling. once again, it makes me nauseated to think about him growing old in prison. something about this entire case makes me feel uncharacteristically sentimental and defensive.

can we also keep in mind that in most of these cases the perps were also victims of lifelong social isolation, harassment and depression? as well as often a host of other unaddressed mental illnesses?

obviously killing a bunch of kids who probably didn’t know what damage they were doing in not the answer but in most the these cases, the people who did the shootings had been in need of help they weren’t getting for a long, long time. mental illness doesn’t make people evil, but when it goes unrecognized or is responded to with penal action, it can… make things harder.

being good-looking shouldn’t be why people write to him; loneliness being the likeliest motivation factor behind his crimes should be why people write to him. if you’ve ever been bullied, excluded, afraid and alone, writing to these kids (him and others) who have been convicted in school shooting cases can only help their healing.

the american penal system is fucked. it prioritizes justice as punishment over reeducation and healing, over teaching people to function ins society and express themselves in productive, non-violent ways. it throws people into jail instead of rehab of welfare. and that’s fucked.

yeah. this kid did wrong. let’s not downplay that. he murdered three people, seemingly random people, and injured two more, and traumatized every fucking kid at that school. he left parents childless. he left holes in social circles. he robbed the world of people who would otherwise have gone on to live lives, potentially amazing lives. and but goddamn, he was suffering. don’t write him fanmail about how cute he is, that’s fucked too- but write him to tell him he’s not alone. sure. that you’ve been lonely too.

thank god, at least he’s not eligible for capital punishment. get these kids help, make sure these teenagers, all teenagers, feel supported and cared for, and these things won’t fucking happen.

There needs to be more school shootings with emphasis on how the schools and the students fucked the shooters up, how bullying and systematic violence is the problem not the kid who lashes out. This kid deserves a fucking medal, this kids school deserves to be burnt to the ground.
